Forged Knives

Going out to buy a knife is pretty easy but once you reach a shop the varieties can leave you baffled! From folded to tactical, from collectors to everyday use; there are so many! Do you know the difference between forged knives &stamped ones? Well, you will now:

Production Dissimilarities

A forged knife comes into existence when a technician or an automated device heats a single piece of steel and then shapes it accordingly. On the other hand, stamped knives are such that they are cut from a huge bar of steel and then refined. Henceforth, stamped knives are lighter and less sturdy.

Characteristics of Forged Knives

A forged knife is distinct such that it has a ‘bolster’ which is a broader part near the handgrip. Its function is purely that of physics i.e. it maintains balance of the knife. For chefs, this is a dream utensil for the excellent grip it allows. A forged knife is also recognized to have blade extensions leading into the handle a.k.a. the tang. So if you notice metal at the handle’s edge or bolts in the middle, you’re probably looking at a forged knife. Again, this feature permits the knife to be stable and more resilient. If you’re not an expert though, it is better to ask someone too.

Are there quality dissimilarities?

Forged knives are made by a more tedious process than stamped ones, hence they also cost more. It used to be pretty black and white that a forged knife is better than a stamped knife in terms of excellence, ease of use and productivity. Nevertheless, now the greys have seeped in, which means that both the products are available in magnificent qualities as well as pathetic ones. That’s not all; even semi forged-semi stamped knives are now in the market!

So how do I buy one?

In the end, everything depends on your comfort level. Some users like the feel of a weighty knife that is more poised, while others prefer a knife daintier on the feels and calmer on the hand. You’ll find yourself in a much easier position if you do your homework before going out to buy forged knives. Go through the websites of some branded knives, reputed sellers and general Google searches.  Once you’ve got an idea about what you want, head out to some good stores where the staff can assist you into buying what you want.
